Monemvasia means 'single entrance'. Connected to the south-eastern Pelopponese by a narrow causeway, this fortified medieval town is like a miniature island adrift in time. Wildflowers sprout from the ruins of the citadel and cosy stone guesthouses are tucked away in the cobbled lanes. It's only natural that Malvasia wine – or Malmsey, as Shakespeare called it - is still produced in the region's excellent wineries. The best time to visit is for the autumn grape harvest.
